Tubing Movement Calculator
Tubing Movement Calculator works out how far a tubing string sealed in a packer moves — or how much force it develops if it can't — when pressures and temperatures change between two well conditions. All four effects are calculated separately and shown side by side rather than rolled into a single opaque number: piston force at the packer, pressure buckling, ballooning from the change in average pressure, and thermal expansion. Because the effects add and cancel, a near-zero total can conceal two large opposing movements, so the breakdown is always shown alongside the sum. Enter the well before and after the operation and every pressure change is derived for you, including the average-pressure figures ballooning depends on and which are easy to confuse with differential pressure.
How It Works
Total movement = piston + pressure buckling + ballooning + temperature. Negative length is upward movement; negative force is tension. Method after Lubinski, Althouse & Logan (Journal of Petroleum Technology, June 1962).

When You'd Use It
Before setting a packer or spacing out a completion, an engineer needs to know whether pressure testing, stimulating, or producing the well will pull a seal assembly out of its bore, buckle the string, or overload the packer — and which of the four effects is driving it.
