Max Overpull Calculator
Max Overpull Calculator answers the question every engineer asks before pulling harder on a stuck string or a set tool: how much MORE can I safely pull? From pipe OD, ID, and API steel grade, it computes the pipe body's own tensile yield strength, the maximum safe tension at a standard 1.25 design-factor threshold, and the additional overpull available above your current load — or run it in reverse to find the resulting design factor at a hypothetical target tension.
How It Works
Pipe body yield (lbf) = wall area (in²) × grade minimum yield (psi). Maximum safe tension = pipe body yield ÷ 1.25. Maximum additional overpull = maximum safe tension − current load.

When You'd Use It
Working a stuck string or releasing a set tool, engineers need to know the margin left before exceeding the pipe body's own safe tensile limit — this calculator turns a known current load (off the weight indicator) into a hard ceiling on how much more can be pulled before risking a parted string.
