Shear Out Force Calculator

Completion Tools

Shear Out Force Calculator converts pressure differential to force using piston area, so you can confirm operating pressures stay safely below — or setting forces reliably above — the rated shear value of a tool's pins or screws. Supports single and ganged (multi-pin) configurations with a built-in safety margin check.

How It Works

Shear force = pressure differential × piston area. For a ganged configuration: total rated shear = per-pin rated shear × pin count. Safety margin = rated shear value ÷ applied force.

See every formula worked through in detail on the Completion Engineering Formulas reference.

When You'd Use It

Before setting a packer or shearing a plug open, engineers confirm the applied setting pressure reliably clears the pins' rated shear value with margin, while staying safely below pressures reached during routine operations like acidizing or pressure testing — so the tool shears when intended and never before.
